Ex-Student's Exhibition

Kim Lawler

Kim Lawler, [a former pic student]
Between Lines
Tue 29 Sep 09 to Sat 10 Oct 09

gallery hours: Tue - Fri 11am to 5pm
Sat 12pm to 4pm

admission:free

“Beyond romance or nostalgia, Lawler’s lucid visual studies reveal the aesthetic beauty of the stories being written and rewritten onto this responsive and at times fragile environment.” Amy Barclay, curator

Between Lines comprises a series of aerial photographs taken in the Kimberley, far north Western Australia. This remote area is embedded with stories of Indigenous and non-Indigenous inhabitants, transitory visitors and scarred by multinational companies resource development. The artist, Kim Lawler, is concerned with markings, both natural and constructed, that tell stories of places, transitions and interruptions that occur within the landscape.

Between Lines is informed by Lawler's experience of living in these regions and local perspectives on the displacement of people and their consequential relationship to the land that has taken place. It is also informed by the opposing qualities of abandon and connection that occur as the stories within these landscapes continue to unfold.

Must See Exhibition

Long Distance Vision:
Three Australian Photographers

28 August – 21 February 2010
Gallery 11, Level 2
*Access via Joseph Brown Collection
Admission free

This exhibition examines the idea of the ‘tourist gaze’ and its relationship with three contemporary Australian photographers.

Since the mid-nineteenth century, tourism and photography have concurrently developed and expanded. Writer John Urry described the importance of this relationship when he said, “The immensely expanding popularity of photography in the later nineteenth century indicates the importance of new forms of visual perception, and their role in structuring the tourist gaze that was emerging in this period.” Since that time photography has been a means by which people could discover the world through magazines, books, postcards and personal photographs.

From my own notes; here are some of my first impressions:-

Long Distance Vision

Christine Godden.

All typical modernist images in scale and subject matter, mostly feminine subject matter too, not sure where the tourist aspect comes in though as all the images have that typical Aussie light, perhaps the catalogue would more to offer?

Three prints, obviously printed on different paper much cooler than the rest? Intentional? Doubt it? Beautiful work nonetheless. 'Krista on the float' beautiful long tonal scale and despite the almost too easy graphical nature of the composition, just fits so well together. Very early POMO at one level but still somehow charming and elegant holding up well in this age of HUGE digital works a real pleasure to see. 'Elena's pillow' 1974, almost looks silver. A pillow photographed on a shag pile carpet, not much else really. Just looks close to luminous as I've ever seen, in a print from some one othe than, LW, or Lobby. Just read the wall 'blurb' and I was pretty spot on except, it was all shot in the U.S. over a 6 year period. Almost makes me wanna break out the Metol and start printing! Awesome stuff!

The other 2 are very interesting as well. a real must see for 2009.

2nd year film excursion

Cinema Nova 380 Lygon street. Carlton.

Cinema Nova

Wed 2nd Sept @ Cinema Nova to see " the September Issue"
meet outside Borders at 10.45 am. $9 admission.
Already a celebrity in her own right, Vogue editor Anna Wintour became a household name following the Oscar nominated The Devil Wears Prada, in which Meryl Streep famously played Wintour’s alter ego. Following the creation of Vogue Magazine’s influential ‘September Issue’, R.J. Cutler’s riveting and hilarious documentary breaks-down the doors of the publication to show the blood, sweat and tears put into what effectively comes to shape 12 months of international fashion. Interviewing Wintour, creative director Grace Coddington and countless others who each contribute to the magazine, THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE brings newfound respect to the people whose efforts dress the western world.

Notice This!

Inkjet Printing

Demand will begin to rise on the inkjet printers as we enter the 3rd last week of the term, that's right folks there are only three weeks left in this term, so now would be a good time to get your skates on. As we anticipate the increase in demand on inkjet printers, we will place booking sheets on the wall in the digital hub every Wednesday. Make sure you're here to book and make sure you show on your allocated day/time, if you are 15 minutes late the printer is forfeited to the next person waiting.

Paperwork/Beauracracy

Irene will be asking you to fill in some paper work in Pathways this week, this will speed the final making process for later on in the term, please show up and help, we actually need your signature of the paperwork if it is missing we will have difficulty processing your final results for 2009.

End of Year Exhibition

We need a volunteer to design the annual invite for the 2009 exhibition, if you are interested in either offering an image up for the invite or actually designing it, please see Kevin. URGENTLY

Student Prizes

In what is a first this year, we are planning on awarding acquisitive prizes for several styles and genres of work, the details are sketchy at the moment, but we think we will award prizes to 5 of the best pieces made this year, and the winners will be paid for their prints, which we will then keep. As I said details are yet to be nutted out but everyone will be in the running for these acquisitive prizes.

Finally, a Photography Exhibition

Both Ian Potter and the NGVI Are running photography shows at the moment. Ian Potter has, an exhibition entitled, Long Distance Vision, that...

examines the idea of the ‘tourist gaze’ and its relationship with three contemporary Australian photographers.
The NGVI has a show that looks at photographs
that depict space travel, seen in archival images from NASA, space allegories, and altered perceptions of reality inspired by ideas of science and space. These photographs also show a fascination with light, as both the means and the subject of the image.

Large format location shoot

Grp 5 are meeting this Tuesday the 4th of August at 10.30am at the Abbotsford convent, enter via St Heliers Street.

Important; AND interesting upcoming shows

Stuart here. Yes folks I am back. Looking forward to hearing your stories of creative adventure you've undertaken while I was gone.

Here are some shows I think yo should see next week.

Liu Xiao Xian: From East to West

One of the most compelling contemporary Chinese Australian artists, Liu Xiao Xian explores the nuances between East and West with playfulness and wit, revealing some profound differences as well as shared concerns and values. Born in China and raised during the Cultural Revolution, Liu Xiao Xian left Beijing for Sydney after the Tiananmen Square Massacre. On this twentieth anniversary of Tiananmen, it is fitting that RMIT Gallery is focusing on his photographs and sculptures which explore the subtleties of his diasporic experiences. The exhibition will include chess sets that incorporate Australian indigenous animals and introduced species, large scale portraits of Buddha comprised of images of Jesus, and stereographic images with Liu’s face superimposed that highlight the relative invisibility of Asians in Australian settler history.

New Scientist Eureka Science Photography Prize 2009

Curated and managed by the Australian Museum, this exhibition showcases the best twenty-five entries in the annual Eureka Prize for Science Photography, sponsored by New Scientist. The Prize is awarded for a single photograph that most effectively communicates an aspect of science, and is a significant component of the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes, Australia’s premier science awards. For this prize, the definition of science is a comprehensive one including the natural, physical, applied or life sciences (including agricultural sciences); environmental issues; biodiversity issues; flora and fauna; medicine; astronomy; information technology; technological innovation; engineering and health science; as well as work that addresses the social or economic consequences of science. The winners of the 2008 Prize were Phred Petersen (first); Steven Morton (second), Katrina Putker (third).
